My students did such an amazing job on their first project.  They are just learning the basic concepts of collage.  I wanted to them to focus on the ways to cut paper and how to choose various types of paper.  There is everything from bus tickets to flyers to receipts used in these collages.  We talked about the function of paper, different types of paper, where we find paper and how we can reuse paper for art.  They spent time sketching their preferred tree (they had a page of tree shapes to give them some ideas) and they cut and applied the paper however they wanted.  If you would like my lesson plan, just email and I would be happy to share.
My students are ages 8-12 and they are from various Spanish-speaking countries.  It is really great to teach them and do it in Spanish.  Yay.

My friend had a clothing swap the other day and not only is this the best idea ever, but I found so many fabulous things!!  I got dresses, blazers, purses, more dresses, skirts, ahhhh so much stuff!

Despite it’s obvious shortcomings (being a movie about a lonely actress that wants to make her own movie…directed, written and starring the one and only Asia, daughter of Dario, Argento) I really liked it.  It was playing at the Yerba Buena Center for the arts and I was one of maybe ten people in the audience.  The religious allusions were weak and confusing, but the cinéma vérité cinematography was pretty successful for me.  I think I was a bit swayed because my favorite Italian word is cazzo and all the characters said cazzo many times, which made me happy.

And then!  There was a video, an actual little movie that started with black and white clips of Yoko and then Yoko and John and then Sean and some of Yoko’s most famous art works/performances, and then in color and voice overs and a bit of narration and quotes–it was just so cool to see a nicely put together little retro of her life.  And as if to say–here I am it’s not even close to done yet, she came out in all her Yoko glory and just gave us an awesome show.

It kinda sounded like this:

aahhh ahhh ahh ahh ooooooooooohooooooooooooohooooooooooo  argh argh argh baaaaawaaaaahhhhhhooooooooooooooooo  follow your heart aaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh  etc.

but like better.  And, you know, the way she does it.

The ‘new’ Plastic Ono Band is super super super.  With Sean Lennon (who is SEAN LENNON), Yuka Honda (who I LOVE), and Cornelius (who just rocks rocks) and other guests like Harper Simon.

just so wonderful.

And now for the latest product of the workshop…my urban cowboy…

He sits at the bus stop all night, everyday, with his head down, chin pressing against his chest, legs straight out in front of him and arms folded neatly into himself.  Always wearing black: black cowboy hat, black cowboy boots, black dress shirt and vest and slacks.  His silhouette is only visible because he’s up against the hard glaring illumination of the bus shelter.

The first time I drove by I thought he was just a lonely maybe drunk, maybe homeless man (or both), maybe waiting for a bus.  But Brooke said he’s there every night, just after 10pm and has been ever since she can remember.

Some say he’s a killer waiting for a lonely girl to take away.  Some say he’s just waiting for his daughter, who was abducted, to be returned.  Some say he’s waiting for an old lover who left him for another man, or that he’s waiting for that man, to take revenge.

I think he’s a ghost.  He died decades ago, for some reason dressed like that and can’t ever leave from that spot until his soul returns.

Brooke kinda agrees with my theory, no one really knows.  But for sure, he’s definitely waiting for something, soul or not, and after seeing him myself more times then I can count only at night, often under a full moon, I’m too scared to ever find out.
